New details have emerged regarding the cancelled BioWare project titled Mass Effect: Universe. According to former technical director Romain Toutain, the game was designed to incorporate every decision made by players throughout the original Commander Shepard trilogy, effectively creating personalized timelines for each user.
The project utilized a complex system to manage narrative states, allowing players to connect save files to generate distinct branching paths. Toutain compared this mechanic to the 2016 title Zero Time Dilemma, noting that the game featured a logic-based system capable of validating narrative conditions at any given moment during gameplay.
Toutain described the technology as highly ambitious, confirming it functioned similarly to the Dragon Age: Keep tool by allowing players to manage narrative states. He expressed significant enthusiasm for the system, which aimed to resolve logical equations to ensure the validity of player choices across the branching timeline structure.
Following the recent closure of the studio by Electronic Arts, the development of Mass Effect: Universe has been cancelled alongside other franchise plans. In response to the cancellation, fans have launched the #SaveMassEffect movement, which has garnered 185,000 signatures on a petition to date.
