Helen Chiang, the inaugural chief operating officer for Xbox, has exited the company shortly after her promotion under CEO Asha Sharma. Her departure follows a brief tenure in the role, which was tasked with managing the division's profitability during a period of financial difficulty.
Chiang previously spent 20 years at Microsoft, contributing to the development of Xbox Live and managing the Minecraft franchise under Mojang. As COO, she was responsible for unifying the company's operating model across hardware, software, and services to improve investment clarity and accountability.
While Sharma expressed gratitude for Chiang's service in a staff memo, reports from Eurogamer and Tom Warren suggest the exit resulted from a policy violation. Microsoft has declined to comment on specific personnel matters, leaving the exact nature of the situation officially unconfirmed.
The leadership change occurs as Xbox faces significant market challenges, including record-low US hardware sales for the Xbox Series X|S in September. Sharma stated that she will provide updates regarding the vacant COO position in the future.
