A recent report from The Wall Street Journal indicates that the upcoming Elden Ring film, directed by Alex Garland, may feature a production budget approaching $200 million. This significant financial commitment would represent the most expensive project ever financed by distributor A24.
This reported investment marks a departure from A24's traditional strategy, which typically prioritizes films with lower production costs. For context, the company's previous high-budget project, Marty Supreme, cost $70 million, while the successful Backrooms film was produced on a $10 million budget.
While theatrical performance remains a primary indicator of commercial success, profitability also relies on streaming agreements, Blu-ray sales, and video-on-demand revenue. The film is currently slated for a theatrical release in March 2028.
The project faces a unique market position compared to other recent video game adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog or the Super Mario Bros. films. While those titles targeted younger audiences, the Elden Ring adaptation's commercial potential remains to be seen as it lacks an official age rating.
