Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan has reportedly engaged in discussions with AMD CEO Lisa Su regarding potential areas of cooperation. While the two companies have historically maintained a fierce rivalry in the processor market, these talks signal a shift as Intel seeks to regain its industry footing.

During an October 24 fireside chat with CASPA President Jimmy Cheng, Tan emphasized a strategic pivot toward flexibility. He intends to rebuild Intel's CPU business by prioritizing custom silicon tailored to specific customer workloads, moving away from the company's traditional resistance to modifying designs for client needs.

Tan's broader strategy focuses on growth in application-specific integrated circuits, advanced packaging, and foundry services. He noted that the 18A manufacturing process has reached volume production, with the 14A process design kit version 0.5 already released. Volume production for 14A is targeted for early 2027, though Intel has not disclosed specific customer identities or order sizes.

Existing cooperation between the firms includes the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group formed in October 2024 and recent efforts to unify PyTorch AI inference code paths. Despite these collaborative technical initiatives, neither Intel nor AMD has officially announced a new formal agreement following the recent discussions between their respective CEOs.
