BioWare, the Edmonton-based studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, is facing closure following the acquisition of Electronic Arts by an investment consortium. The shutdown was made official last week, impacting the developer as the new owners prioritize successful sports franchises over single-player titles.
Avi Lewis, leader of the New Democratic Party, has publicly criticized the move as a typical example of private equity firms dismantling companies for short-term profit. He argues that the studio's staff should be granted the first opportunity to purchase and manage the company themselves.
Lewis suggests that the Canadian government should provide federal support to facilitate this transition. He maintains that the developers possess the necessary expertise to run the studio and continue creating the games that fans appreciate, despite recent commercial struggles.
The closure of BioWare is part of a broader wave of layoffs affecting 400 employees across various teams, including Maxis, Full Circle, and Respawn. The decision was executed by a consortium comprising PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, following their acquisition of Electronic Arts.
