Onimusha: Way of the Sword faced significant debate regarding its difficulty levels prior to its release. While some players initially found the combat challenging, others felt the experience was overly simplistic. Following the launch of the million-seller title, game director Satoru Nihei has defended the final balance, asserting that the team successfully achieved their intended level of challenge.

Nihei clarified that the development team did not aim for the extreme difficulty found in titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or the Nioh series. Instead, the goal was to ensure players could progress through the narrative while still experiencing a sense of satisfaction from overcoming enemy encounters. Nihei noted that players do face defeat, but they are ultimately able to move forward.

Capcom is utilizing in-game telemetry to monitor player progress and identify specific areas where users struggle. According to Nihei, this data confirms that the current difficulty trends align closely with the studio's original design objectives. The game has received critical acclaim, with reviewer Dom Peppiatt praising its innovative approach to the action genre and its ability to deliver a legendary swordsman experience without relying on traditional Soulslike tropes.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is currently available for players on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
