Ken Kutaragi, the creator of the original PlayStation, has expressed concerns regarding the future of dedicated gaming hardware. During an interview with The Game Business at the Game Republic New Horizons conference, Kutaragi suggested that the industry is heading toward an unsustainable economic model that could eventually render traditional consoles obsolete.

Kutaragi identifies the rising cost of computer components as a primary threat to the current console business model. He argues that the industry's relentless pursuit of increased hardware power has led to prohibitively expensive machines, noting that high-end PC prices have reached levels comparable to automobiles, which may alienate consumers.

The integration of artificial intelligence into online infrastructure is cited as a significant factor that could displace physical consoles. By offloading complex computational tasks to remote servers, similar to how Google Gemini operates, the industry might eliminate the need for high-performance hardware in the home, according to Kutaragi.

Kutaragi clarifies that these views are personal opinions rather than official statements from Sony, a company he left in 2007. He acknowledges that a transition to cloud-based gaming faces challenges, such as reliance on internet connectivity and the massive investment required for server infrastructure, leaving the future of dedicated gaming hardware uncertain.
