The YouTube channel Throaty Mumbo has successfully developed a Windows-like desktop environment for the original NES. By utilizing an EverDrive N8 Pro cartridge, which features an FPGA-powered processor, the project offloads heavy x86 emulation tasks from the console's native 8-bit hardware. This setup allows the NES to execute Intel 80186-compatible instructions via the Next186 open-source core.
The custom interface functions as a menu replacement for the EverDrive N8 Pro, offering a more functional experience than previous attempts at emulating Windows 98. Users can navigate the desktop, access files, and play a functional version of Minesweeper. The project also includes firmware for an RP2350 microcontroller, enabling USB keyboard and mouse support, as well as MIDI functionality for digital audio workstations.
Hardware integration remains a significant challenge. While the creator attempted to use a Family BASIC keyboard, the device suffered from input errors and physical fitment issues. Furthermore, the system's internet capabilities are extremely limited; while a 3D-printed NESCD drive with WiFi allows for connectivity, the console relies on a laptop proxy to simplify web requests for the low-resolution display.
The NESPC project files and firmware are currently available on GitHub for those interested in the experiment. The system demonstrates the potential for retro hardware to act as a desktop environment, provided it is supported by external processing units and custom peripheral interfaces.
