A petition hosted on Change.org by Joe Smith has exceeded 210,000 signatures, reflecting fan opposition to Electronic Arts' recent decision to shutter BioWare and cancel the upcoming Mass Effect title. This mobilization follows the official confirmation of the studio's closure last Thursday.
The campaign urges Electronic Arts to either provide the necessary funding and staff to continue development or transfer the franchise license to another studio capable of preserving the series' legacy. The project, which was originally announced in 2020, had been reported as progressing by the project director as recently as last year.
Electronic Arts stated it will pivot resources toward sports titles, Apex Legends, Battlefield, and action projects like the upcoming Star Wars Jedi and Marvel's Iron Man games. These corporate shifts also resulted in staff reductions at other studios, including the Full Circle team responsible for the new Skate.
Regarding the community's efforts, former Gears of War producer Laura Fryer noted that when players stop voicing their concerns, a game is effectively dead. Additionally, the situation has prompted various reactions, including a suggestion from a Canadian politician to purchase the studio.
