Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has publicly condemned Valve's AI content disclosure policy for Steam, labeling the requirement a political act. Sweeney argues that forcing developers to disclose AI usage in areas like artwork, sound, and narrative is intended to facilitate cancel campaigns against games.
The policy mandates that developers disclose AI-generated content consumed by players, though it excludes efficiency gains. Sweeney contends this creates a real economic cost for developers by undermining their business, comparing the disclosure requirement to forcing developers to list their political affiliations.
The remarks faced significant backlash from industry figures and users. David Goldfarb, founder of The Outsiders, argued that customers have a right to know what they are purchasing and dismissed the notion of a hate mob as far-fetched. Others criticized Sweeney's comparison of AI disclosures to voting history as illogical.
While Sweeney pivots Epic toward maximum AI acceleration, including the release of a new launcher built with generative AI, Valve has remained silent. Steam continues to maintain its market dominance, recently reaching a record of 43.5 million concurrent users.
