Key information
A leaked internal trailer for a cancelled BioWare project, titled Mass Effect Universe, has surfaced online. According to franchise technical director Romain Toutain, the game was named for its ambitious system designed to incorporate player choices from previous entries to generate alternate timelines.
Toutain explained that the game utilized a stateful system capable of solving logical equations to validate player decisions. If a choice created a conflict, the system would determine if new content or branches were required to maintain narrative consistency, effectively allowing players to construct parallel universes.
The developer compared the mechanic to Dragon Age Keep but noted it featured greater complexity. The system aimed to provide absolute autonomy, managing mission outcomes dynamically. For instance, if a player killed a character required for a mission, the game would either adjust the path to ensure completion or allow the mission to fail based on designer intent.
While Toutain described the technology as difficult to implement, he maintained that it functioned well. The project remains cancelled following the closure of the studio, leaving the potential impact of these mechanics on the franchise as a subject of speculation.
