A recent Sensor Tower study commissioned by GamesIndustry.biz reveals that independent games and original titles have gained substantial popularity on PC and consoles in 2026 compared to 2025. The data indicates a notable shift in market dynamics as players seek alternatives to traditional industry trends.
The analysis tracked games selling over 500,000 units in their first month. In the 2026 cohort, 76 games reached this threshold, up from 55 in 2025. Total units sold for these titles rose 51% year-over-year, climbing from 120.5 million to 182.4 million units.
Independent titles accounted for 43% of the 2026 cohort, a significant increase from 24% in 2025. While sequels still dominated 55% of paid units in the first month, new series saw success, representing 53% of 2026's top titles. Original intellectual property also grew, with 35 new IP titles appearing in 2026, 27 of which were developed by independent studios.
Karl Kontus of Sensor Tower notes that independent success complements rather than replaces AAA market share. While AAA studios focus on risk management with established franchises, innovation is increasingly driven by independent and AA developers. Notable 2026 hits include Meccha Chameleon, How to Fish, Slay the Spire 2, and Hollow Knight: Silksong.
