Microsoft has introduced official support for Intel's Advanced Performance Extensions (APX) within Windows 11. While the feature is currently accessible via a toggle in insider build 29695, no consumer hardware currently supports this technology.
Intel designed APX to expand the x86-64 instruction set architecture by doubling general-purpose registers from 16 to 32. This modification aims to improve efficiency by reducing the total number of instructions in compiled code by approximately 10%, thereby conserving CPU cycles.
The technology is scheduled to debut alongside "Nova Lake" processors in early 2027. These upcoming chips are expected to feature a 52-core architecture and utilize AVX10.2, which requires both P-cores and E-cores to support AVX-512 acceleration.
By integrating these optimizations into Windows 11 ahead of the hardware launch, Microsoft intends to ensure that software is prepared to leverage the increased processing capacity and efficiency gains provided by the new register set and vector processing capabilities.
