Key information

The upcoming Elden Ring film, directed by Alex Garland for studio A24, is reportedly facing a massive production budget of $200 million. This figure, cited by the Wall Street Journal, is double the initial estimates reported when filming began in April.

This expenditure represents a significant departure for A24, a studio historically known for financing independent and auteur-driven projects with much lower costs. Previous high-budget efforts from the studio, such as Civil War and Marty Supreme, reached only $50 million and $70 million respectively.

The $200 million investment places the project among the most expensive video game adaptations ever produced, rivaling the $200 million budget of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It far exceeds the production costs of other notable adaptations like Warcraft at $160 million and Super Mario Bros. at $100 million.

Beyond production costs, marketing expenses could add an estimated $50 to $100 million to the total financial burden. The film is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on March 3, 2028, leaving the studio under significant pressure to ensure the project's commercial success.
