On October 6, the Tokyo-based game developer Iruka released a free PC title titled The Trial of the Gate (Study). Developed by the company's younger staff members, the game is described as an art project presented in the form of a puzzle.
The gameplay mechanics are based on the classic Sokoban style, where players control a character with a flower for a face to push boxes and create paths toward gates. The experience spans six stages, with each completion revealing text that hints at the work's thematic meaning.
The director drew inspiration from Franz Kafka's short story Before the Law and the Greek myth of Sisyphus to explore feelings of uncertainty. While the game lacks complex gimmicks, it is designed to be completed in 30 minutes to one hour, functioning similarly to an art appreciation experience at a museum.
The project ultimately reflects a shift in the director's perspective, moving from existential anxiety toward a more hopeful conclusion. The Trial of the Gate (Study) is currently available for free on Steam for PC users.
