Sega and Creative Assembly have temporarily pulled Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition from sale just two days after its October 13, 2026, launch. The companies issued a joint statement on October 15, 2026, acknowledging that the release failed to meet player expectations and their own internal standards.

The backlash was primarily driven by technical issues, performance problems, and widespread criticism regarding the use of generative AI in the game's visuals. Players specifically pointed to UI icons and unit cards displaying common AI artifacts, such as hands with extra fingers. While Sega and Creative Assembly have not confirmed or denied the use of generative AI, the game's Steam user rating plummeted to an "Overwhelmingly Negative" status, with only 15% positive reviews by October 17.

The original 2011 version of the game, which previously held a 91% "Very Positive" rating, was removed from storefronts during the Complete Edition launch, effectively cutting off Steam Workshop access for modders. Following the recent controversy, Sega has reinstated the original 2011 title for purchase at €29,99 while they investigate the issues.

Sega confirmed that existing owners of the Complete Edition will retain access to the game. The publisher is currently working with its development partner to identify the root causes of the complaints and implement necessary improvements, though no specific timeline for a return to sale or future updates has been provided.
