Metacritic, a prominent review aggregation site, is facing scrutiny regarding how it converts scores from various media outlets into its standardized 100-point metascore. Simon Zijlemans, editor-in-chief of Power Unlimited, recently highlighted concerns on X regarding Eurogamer’s ratings appearing as 60 points on Metacritic for several highly-rated titles.

The discrepancy arises because Eurogamer utilizes a five-star rating system, where three stars represent a generally positive or mixed review. Metacritic converts this three-star rating into a 60-point score for its weighted average, which often positions Eurogamer as one of the lowest-scoring outlets for games that otherwise receive high praise.

Critics argue that this conversion fails to capture the nuance of Eurogamer’s intent, as a three-star rating is not intended as a low score. Forbes reporter Paul Tassi noted that such numerical drops can negatively impact a game's overall metascore, potentially affecting studio performance or even leading to closures.

Eurogamer adopted the five-star system in May 2023, citing its intuitive nature compared to 10-point scales. While media outlets maintain autonomy over their review policies, the situation raises questions about whether Metacritic should re-evaluate its conversion methodology to better reflect the intended sentiment of diverse rating systems.
