Creative Assembly recently removed Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from sale following community concerns regarding performance issues and the potential use of generative AI. The studio acknowledged that the title failed to meet both player expectations and internal quality standards.

Total War vice president Roger Collum clarified that the title was not developed internally by Creative Assembly and therefore bypassed standard internal review processes. While the specific external partner was not named by Collum, Steam listings identify Warsaw-based Mataboo Games as a co-developer on the project.

Collum emphasized that Creative Assembly does not utilize generative AI for asset creation and mandates that external partners adhere to the same policy. He stated that the studio views itself as a craft-focused organization where technology should support, rather than replace, human creativity and judgment.

To address the situation, a team of senior developers is currently collaborating with Sega and the external partner to investigate the issues. Collum accepted personal responsibility for the oversight, promising to work toward restoring player trust through necessary improvements and accountability.
