Key information
Former Konami developer Takashi Kitao has released an open-source project called Playload. This miniature game engine allows users to convert entire game source codes into URLs, facilitating easy sharing via social media platforms like X.
The engine operates on JavaScript and features a built-in web browser editor. A primary constraint is that compressed code must remain under 3 kilobytes. This limit is designed to leverage X's URL shortening feature, which automatically condenses links under 4096 characters into 23-character URLs.
Despite the strict size limitations, Playload includes robust specifications such as a 160x144 pixel CRT-style display, support for 8 colors, 3 sound channels, and basic 8x8 pixel dot graphics. It also supports 4-directional movement and 2-button inputs.
Since its release on the 21st, users have utilized the engine to create various genres, including puzzle games, shooters, and 3D dungeon crawlers. Kitao previously served as a lead engineer and designer for the Zone of the Enders series.
