A recent analysis by Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics examines the commercial performance of the last four Game of the Year winners: Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, Astro Bot, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. These titles, awarded between 2022 and 2025, have collectively generated approximately 3.8 billion dollars in revenue from 73 million copies sold.
Elden Ring remains a top performer, with 36.4 million copies sold. Its success is attributed to a diverse platform split, with 50% of sales on PC. The game continues to see engagement, adding two million copies in 2026 alone. Additionally, 9.8 million players have surpassed 100 hours of gameplay, and the title has expanded through releases like Shadow of the Erdtree and Nightreign.
Baldur’s Gate 3 demonstrates significant longevity, particularly on PC, which accounts for 80.6% of its 23.2 million sales. Larian Studios’ RPG maintains over 2 million monthly active users. Meanwhile, the PS5 exclusive Astro Bot has reached 4.7 million copies, with 46.6% of sales being physical, driven by collector interest and gift-giving.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has achieved 8.7 million sales, with 58.8% on Steam. Elliot notes that these four titles succeed without relying on massive 300 million dollar budgets, proving that diverse strategies allow games to maintain relevance and reach new audiences long after their initial award recognition.
