Charging electric vehicles remains a significant challenge in Spain, where approximately 9 million cars are parked on public streets. Without consistent access to charging infrastructure, potential owners face persistent uncertainty regarding how to power their vehicles outside of private garages.

European neighbors are addressing this by repurposing common urban infrastructure. In Germany, the company Rheinmetall has developed a system that integrates chargers directly into sidewalk curbs. This design maintains the aesthetic of the street while providing 22 kW of power, avoiding obstructions for pedestrians.

London has also advanced its infrastructure by adapting streetlights for charging. Furthermore, as of October, the city updated its regulations to allow curb-side charging installations without requiring specific urban planning permits, simplifying the process for residents to charge vehicles near their homes.

Spain previously attempted to utilize streetlights for charging, such as a 2021 project in Valencia involving 22 units. However, legal restrictions prohibiting charging installations from attaching to public lighting led to the project's abandonment, leaving the country behind these European developments.
