Team 4 developers introduced five new heroes to Overwatch nearly one year ago, including the highly anticipated Jetpack Cat. While fans initially celebrated the orange cat in a flight-capable suit, the character quickly became a source of frustration due to a dominant strategy known as the Apache Helicopter meta.
The problematic tactic involved Jetpack Cat carrying Bastion into the air, allowing the latter to rain fire from above. Associate Game Director Alec Dawson admitted the team recognized the potential danger during internal testing, noting that adding Mercy to the duo created an even more formidable aerial threat.
Despite internal concerns, developers intentionally delayed nerfs to allow players to experience the chaotic gameplay. Dawson explained that the team wanted to preserve memorable, extreme moments rather than immediately removing them, aiming to find a delicate balance without destroying the fun for the community.
Following widespread complaints and use in competitive play, the developers eventually reduced the cat's movement speed while carrying allies. Despite these adjustments, many players still consider the hero poorly designed for the game's ecosystem, frequently banning her in ranked matches and calling for further revisions.
