Speculation regarding a potential new Half-Life title has intensified following a slip of the tongue by Mike Morasky, a composer and technical expert at Valve. During the GameSoundCon 2026 seminar, Morasky referenced a project codenamed HLX while discussing audio systems within the Source 2 engine.
While comparing audio technology across different projects, Morasky stated that Deadlock and HLX each utilize their own unique HDR audio systems. Following this mention, he abruptly stopped speaking, and a nearby colleague sarcastically remarked, "Good job," suggesting the disclosure was unintended.
The HLX codename has long been a subject of interest for dataminers, who have previously discovered references to it within Valve's game files. Many fans believe this codename corresponds to a future Half-Life entry, though Valve has never officially confirmed the existence or identity of such a project.
This incident follows a similar occurrence in 2023, when Morasky inadvertently mentioned working on two Half-Life games before quickly correcting himself. As his only official credit in the series is Half-Life: Alyx, the nature of the second title remains a point of public curiosity.
