Electronic Arts has officially announced the closure of BioWare, a decision that has led to the cancellation of the upcoming Mass Effect project. This development has sparked significant uncertainty regarding the future of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age intellectual properties, both of which have been central to BioWare's history and the RPG genre.
Mark Darrah, a former executive producer at BioWare, noted that while EA owns these franchises, the lack of active development teams could theoretically make the publisher more willing to sell them. However, Darrah cautioned that EA might simply choose to keep these properties inactive in a vault rather than divesting them.
Darrah suggests that EA's economic priorities, including a focus on cost reduction, will dictate future actions. He noted that potential sales depend on receiving appropriate offers, though he expects a waiting period before EA evaluates selling inactive assets. Speculation exists that the 20,000 million dollar debt linked to EA's acquisition by Saudi Arabia could influence future divestment strategies.
There is no confirmation of any sale, and EA has a history of maintaining inactive franchises like Dead Space, Medal of Honor, and Mirror’s Edge. Consequently, Mass Effect and Dragon Age could remain dormant for many years without new game development.
