S-Game's Wuxia-inspired action title, Phantom Blade Zero, has emerged as one of the highest-rated games of 2026. Currently holding an 88 on Metacritic, the game is positioned as a potential contender for the 2026 Game Awards in December, outperforming several other major action releases from the same year.
Critics largely praise the title's combat mechanics and kungfupunk aesthetic. IGN's Travis Northup, who awarded the game a 9/10, highlighted the combat as standout and well-tuned over 50 hours. Similarly, GameSpot's Richard Wakeling and VGC's Dave Aubrey lauded the martial arts action, with Aubrey noting it feels stronger than genre peers like Black Myth: Wukong.
Despite the combat praise, reviewers frequently criticized the narrative. Northup described the story as safe, while Wakeling and Aubrey found it difficult to follow or bland. Eurogamer's Emma Kent noted uneven pacing between standard fights and boss battles, and Polygon's Paulo Kawanishi argued the game prioritizes cinematic spectacle over player interactivity.
Technical limitations were also noted, with Northup citing invisible barriers and minor hiccups. While Kent praised the visual storytelling and animations, she noted that review embargo restrictions limited her ability to discuss specific narrative elements in detail.
