NVIDIA has launched version 1.9.0 of its open-source RTX Path Tracing reference sample, available on GitHub. The company reports that this update delivers approximately 20% higher performance compared to the 1.8.1 release while maintaining or improving overall image quality.

The performance improvements stem from several technical adjustments. Developers can now opt to trace a fraction of pixels per frame, and the software utilizes lower bounce limits in faster presets. Additionally, DirectX 12 now supports async compute to overlap post-processing with path tracing, while TLAS instance generation has been shifted to the GPU.

Lighting capabilities have expanded, with NEE-AT sampling now supporting up to 2 million lights. Furthermore, the SHaRC radiance cache is enabled by default in real-time mode. The update also introduces support for Windows on ARM64, a move potentially linked to NVIDIA's Arm-based RTX Spark chip.

While these advancements are significant for the reference sample, the 20% performance uplift does not directly apply to commercial games. Future integration into shipping titles remains uncertain, and developers should be aware of breaking changes and the new requirement for CMake 4.1.
