The European rating organization PEGI has initiated a policy to increase the age rating to PEGI 16 for digital-only games that feature paid random items, such as loot boxes. This update, which began in October 2026, specifically targets titles previously classified as PEGI 3, PEGI 7, or PEGI 12.

This regulatory shift stems from a new classification category introduced in June. PEGI intends to re-evaluate existing titles to ensure they align with these updated standards, requiring companies to update their product listings and marketing materials accordingly across all participating digital storefronts.

PEGI director Dirk Bosmans explained that the re-evaluation of existing titles is necessary to maintain consistency in age ratings over time. This approach specifically targets online games that receive ongoing updates, ensuring that their current content remains accurately reflected by the latest rating criteria.

Because these updates must be implemented across all stores utilizing the PEGI system, the organization noted that the full process will take time to complete. Developers and publishers are expected to keep their product information current as the transition proceeds.
