Microsoft is ending unlimited cloud gaming access, replacing it with a system of monthly quotas and paid hourly packs. This shift, announced in late 2026, follows a period of economic pressure and a previous price hike for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate under Asha Sharma in October 2025.

Starting in November 2026, Game Pass subscribers face strict monthly streaming limits: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium, and 5 hours for Essential. Users can purchase additional "Cloud Playtime" credits, which do not expire, to extend their sessions or access streaming without an active subscription.

The new architecture allows users to stream games they own individually, including titles purchased from the Xbox store, retro-compatible games, and Free Play Days selections. This modular approach enables owners of older hardware, such as the Xbox One, to play recent titles designed for the Xbox Series X|S.

Players have criticized the model, citing concerns over double billing for titles already purchased at full price. Critics note that the hourly costs significantly increase the total expense for long-duration games, such as expansive RPGs, compared to shorter narrative experiences.
