Following the recent closure of BioWare by EA, fans have launched a campaign to preserve the Mass Effect franchise. The studio was shuttered shortly after EA was acquired by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, alongside investment firms Affinity Partners and Silver Lake, resulting in the cancellation of Mass Effect 5.
A change.org petition titled #SaveMassEffect has garnered over 180,000 verified signatures. The initiative, spearheaded by Joe Smith, urges EA to either resume development of the series internally or license the intellectual property to another studio capable of maintaining the franchise's vision.
The petition serves as a platform for fans to express their emotional connection to the series. Supporters like Savannah and Austin shared personal reflections, with Austin noting a 13-year history with the games, while others expressed devastation over the loss of the studio and the cancellation of the upcoming title.
While the petition highlights significant fan enthusiasm, industry observers remain skeptical regarding its impact on EA's corporate decisions. Although the Amazon series based on the franchise is reportedly moving forward, the broader outlook for future titles under the current ownership remains uncertain.
