System Era Softworks, the developer recognized for Astroneer and Starseeker: Starseeker Chronicles, recently confirmed the departure of more than 30 staff members. The studio expressed regret regarding the decision, noting that such actions contradict their core values concerning how employees should be treated.
The studio's communications lead attributed the workforce reduction to the underwhelming performance of Starseeker during its early access launch. This strategic shift aims to align the development team's size with the current userbase while maintaining a sustainable path toward the game's 1.0 release.
The title has faced significant challenges since its debut, including low player engagement and technical difficulties involving a crossplay release on the Nintendo Switch 2. These hurdles contributed to the project's rocky start in the marketplace.
Despite the downsizing, System Era Softworks remains committed to completing the development of Starseeker. The remaining team will continue working toward the official 1.0 launch, albeit with a smaller workforce than previously employed.
