Romain Toutain, a technical director at BioWare since 2022, recently discussed a scrapped project titled Mass Effect Universe during a Twitch stream. While reviewing a leaked trailer, Toutain provided insights into the development goals and lore of this canceled installment.

The game was designed around a complex system where individual save files functioned as distinct parallel universes. According to Toutain, the project aimed to maintain relevance for choices made in the original trilogy and Andromeda, with each new decision generating an alternative timeline similar to the mechanics found in Zero Time Dilemma.

Developers focused on creating technology that linked player decisions to key plot points, ensuring that users could experience the same narrative through vastly different paths. This system was intended to provide players with absolute autonomy, even allowing them to share specific save files that unlocked unique story branches.

Despite efforts from fans and staff to preserve the franchise, Toutain expressed skepticism regarding the project's future. He noted that EA typically opts to shut down projects rather than sell licenses, leaving the status of the series uncertain.
