The Best Sports/Racing Game category at The Game Awards has historically been predictable, with racing titles securing wins nine out of 12 times. The Forza franchise has dominated this space, claiming five victories and maintaining an unbroken winning streak since 2015.
Forza Horizon 6 enters the competition with a strong 90 Metacritic rating and a reputation for iterative excellence. However, it faces a potential challenge from Star Wars: Galactic Racer, which holds an 88 Metascore and aims to disrupt the genre through roguelike structures, buildcrafting, and innovative multiplayer design.
Polygon suggests that Galactic Racer may appeal to the jury due to its Star Wars branding and nostalgic connections to the Burnout and Wipeout lineages. While Forza remains a popular favorite, its lack of new features compared to the innovative approach of its competitor could influence the final outcome.
Although Forza has not faced a serious challenger in a decade, the emergence of a strong contender like Galactic Racer signals a positive shift for the creative health of the racing genre, even if the category remains less prominent than others at the awards ceremony.
