Square Enix's latest RPG, FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, has achieved a significant milestone on Steam. During its opening weekend, the title surpassed the 40,564 concurrent player peak previously held by FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, establishing a new record for single-player entries in the Final Fantasy franchise on the platform.
Developed by Square Enix and LANCARSE, the game utilizes an HD-2D art style to reimagine the first chapter of the mobile title FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS. The project features fully voiced main story sequences, a reconstructed world map, and a turn-based combat system inspired by Octopath Traveler. Players can also utilize a 'Vision' system to summon iconic characters from the series, such as Cloud and Tidus.
The Steam version launched on October 23, one day after the console release. It quickly gained momentum, exceeding the concurrent player counts of both FINAL FANTASY XVI and FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION within its first two days. By October 24, the game reached 38,182 concurrent players before ultimately breaking the series record over the weekend.
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is currently available on PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Writer Yukinori Kitajima, who worked on the original mobile game's script for a decade, expressed his gratitude for the player reception, noting his personal attachment to the central characters Rain, Lasswell, and Fina.
