Major publishers are increasingly selling high-priced collector editions that do not include the actual game software. Recent examples include the "The Goodtime State" pack for GTA 6 and the God of War: Laufey Collector Box, forcing consumers to purchase the game separately.

The industry shift aims to streamline production for a market fragmented by consoles lacking disc drives. By removing the game, publishers create a single, standardized product for all users. This strategy also decouples physical merchandise production from software development schedules, which are prone to delays.

Pricing varies significantly between titles. Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 pack, announced for September 2026, costs 400 euros for lifestyle accessories, while the God of War: Laufey box, expected in February 2027, is priced at 149,99 euros. In both cases, players must pay additional costs to access the software.

Community feedback on platforms like Reddit and X remains largely negative. Players criticize the double-billing model and the inclusion of empty steelbooks. Despite this frustration, these items often sell out, fueling speculation on the secondary market as the industry continues to dissociate physical collectibles from interactive experiences.
