AMD Director of Client Product Management Travis Kirsch recently revealed that CEO Lisa Su was a primary proponent for the return of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Originally debuting in April 2022, the processor was brought back to market this year as a final gesture to loyal users of the decade-old AM4 platform.
The relaunch required significant effort from the company, involving extensive re-engineering and updates to the manufacturing process in collaboration with TSMC. Despite the timing, Kirsch clarified that the decision was not a reaction to DDR5 memory shortages, as the plan was established before those market fluctuations occurred.
Kirsch described the CPU as a final opportunity for users to upgrade existing DDR4-based systems. While AMD remains committed to providing consumer choices across various price points, the company is currently prioritizing the high-performance gaming segment. According to Kirsch, the entry-level desktop market has diminished in size as laptop adoption has increased.
