The long-standing dominance of 1080p resolution in PC gaming is beginning to fade. César Acosta, Senior Director of Gaming Products at AGON by AOC, confirmed that 2026 marks the first year the company has sold more QHD 1440p monitors than Full HD 1080p units, signaling a significant shift in consumer preference.

This trend is corroborated by recent Steam hardware survey data. While 1080p displays previously held a massive majority, September 2026 data shows a 2.61% decline in their usage, bringing them to 47.91%. Conversely, 1440p monitors saw a notable 5.18% increase, now accounting for 27.04% of the surveyed user base.

Despite the growth in 1440p adoption, 4K UHD monitors remain stable at approximately 4.8% usage. Acosta attributes the slower 4K transition to the high performance requirements of modern hardware and the cost of displays. However, he notes that 4K is becoming more accessible due to improved pricing and technologies like Dual Mode, with sales for the brand tripling compared to the previous year.

AOC aims to lead this transition toward higher resolutions in Europe by focusing on high-refresh-rate products, particularly those offering 240 Hz or higher. The company views 1440p as the emerging standard for PC gaming, as players increasingly balance the need for visual fidelity with the demand for fluid performance.
