Sony has filed a patent for an "Audio Processing System and Method" designed to assist players with hearing impairments. This technology aims to improve upon existing accessibility features, such as on-screen text or edge lighting, which often fail to convey the specific meaning behind game sounds.
The system functions by pre-analyzing audio sources to categorize them by intent, such as danger or warnings. It then displays corresponding UI icons directly on the objects producing the sound, such as a red exclamation mark for hazards or a white ellipsis for non-essential audio, helping players prioritize critical information during chaotic gameplay.
Beyond on-screen icons, the system can integrate with physical hardware like controller LEDs or specialized accessibility indicators. These peripherals act as a radar, using color-coded signals to help players identify the direction and urgency of sounds, effectively aiding in spatial awareness.
Sony is reportedly exploring the use of AI to ensure backward compatibility for older titles. This approach could allow legacy games to benefit from these accessibility features without requiring developers to release new updates, potentially extending the reach of games that are no longer actively supported.
