NANTEDOW has released the crime suspense visual novel Shortcake no Maisou on Steam, following its initial distribution at Comic Market 105 in December 2024. The Steam version launched in August 2025. Featuring character designs by voice actor Nozomi Sasaki, the game utilizes her performance experience to depict expressive character emotions.
The narrative begins with protagonist Kisetsu Arakawa attempting to bury his mother's body in the mountains. After being knocked unconscious, he awakens at a pet crematorium where he meets employee Rio Shimizu. This encounter leads Kisetsu to work at the facility, eventually entangling him in a complex web involving politician Taro Shoenji and various individuals facing personal hardships, such as Karin Asahi.
The game explores themes of human connection amidst societal distortion. According to the publication, the dialogue avoids overly tidy explanations, reflecting realistic, often flawed interpersonal communication. Characters are not easily categorized as good or evil, and their struggles with family, economic status, and social barriers are depicted without offering simple solutions or guaranteed resolutions to their suffering.
