Helen Chiang has departed her position as the first-ever chief operating officer at Xbox, according to an internal memo from CEO Asha Sharma. This exit occurs only three months after the role was established in July 2026.

The COO position was created during a period of significant restructuring to address fragmentation within the company. The role carried end-to-end profit and loss responsibility across hardware, content, services, and platforms, aiming to unify operations and improve accountability.

While the specific reasons for Chiang's brief tenure remain undisclosed, her departure follows a 21-year career at Microsoft, where she previously led the Minecraft franchise and contributed to Xbox Live.

This leadership change coincides with broader instability at the company, where 3,200 employees are expected to face layoffs this year. Future plans regarding the COO leadership position will be shared once finalized.
