On October 21, former Konami developer Takashi Kitao released an open-source game engine titled Playload. Known for his work on the Zone of the Enders series and Metal Gear Solid development tools, Kitao designed this engine to facilitate hobbyist programming with a strict focus on extreme file size limitations.

Playload allows users to develop games using JavaScript with a compressed code limit of 3KB. The engine supports an 8-color palette, 160x144 pixel CRT-style displays, and background music playback. To accommodate the lack of external image assets, the engine utilizes Unicode emojis as 8x8 pixel art sprites.

The 3KB limit was specifically chosen to align with X's URL shortening functionality, which handles links up to 4096 characters. By keeping the compressed code within this threshold, developers can share their games directly via a URL in an X post. This design choice aims to turn the platform into a space for competitive, constrained programming.

The engine is currently available for use on the web, with samples including shooting, puzzle, and action games already created. While other initiatives like js13kGames focus on 13KB limits, Playload distinguishes itself by excluding the engine and assets from the 3KB code constraint, offering a unique challenge for developers.
