Nintendo Executive Fellow Shigeru Miyamoto is set to become the first video game developer to receive Japan's Order of Culture. The 73-year-old designer will be honored next month for his significant contributions to cultural development.
Miyamoto, who joined Nintendo in 1977, is recognized for his foundational work on iconic franchises including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Star Fox. He noted that his career began 50 years ago when the medium was still undefined.
Reflecting on the honor, Miyamoto expressed humility during an October 23 press event, stating he accepts the award on behalf of the many collaborators he has worked with throughout his career. He also highlighted his recent involvement in projects beyond gaming, such as Super Nintendo World and film productions.
The Emperor of Japan will present the award during a ceremony on November 3, coinciding with Japan's Culture Day. Miyamoto joins a distinguished list of past recipients, including filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and composer Akira Ifukube.
