Key information
Following the cancellation of the project purportedly titled Mass Effect Universe and the closure of BioWare, new gameplay details have emerged. Verified by IGN through a member of the Mass Effect Council, the game featured handcrafted missions designed with Hitman-style freedom, allowing players to manipulate environments and perform brutal close-range executions.
The game was set 600 years after the Reaper War, featuring a protagonist described as a John Wick or James Bond-type agent equipped with experimental technology. This tech enabled players to see through walls, identify systems, and remotely trigger hazards. The narrative focused on a galactic Cold War involving three major factions, including a Geth superpower that constructed megastructures.
Mechanics included squadmate interactions where members could clash, alongside the return of romance options described as not being sanitized. Liara was set to return as an Asari Matriarch. Development builds reportedly included every major alien race, and the project was intended to cater specifically to series fans.
The cancellation has prompted significant community reaction, including an online petition exceeding 50,000 signatures and calls for a government-supported buyout of the studio. While IGN's Matt Purslow suggested EA failed to recognize the studio's value, the future of the franchise remains uncertain following the studio's shutdown.
