Valve has officially released SteamOS 3.9, a significant update extending beyond the Steam Deck to include Steam Machine and other compatible Linux-based devices. This release focuses on system-wide refinements, addressing various performance areas and internal components to improve the overall user experience across supported hardware.

The update introduces a new Arch Linux base and upgrades the desktop environment to Plasma 6.7.3. This desktop interface, accessible outside of Game Mode, now features a more visible installation button in the Discover app store and improved application categorization. Users can also manage favorites via drag-and-drop and better track background processes.

Technical enhancements include better Wi-Fi compatibility and reconnection stability after suspension. Steam Machine users gain a fix for Remote Play functionality when booting without a display, while RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 graphics hardware receive improved power management during sleep cycles. Additionally, Steam Deck sees reduced power consumption during idle states without audio playback.

Valve has initiated support for hibernation, though it remains disabled on Steam Deck due to an unresolved bug. While SteamOS 3.9 is available for download via system settings, Valve has not yet confirmed if this will be the final major update before the transition to version 4.0.
