Recent reports from Fortune suggest that Microsoft is considering a price point between 1,200 and 1,800 dollars for its upcoming console, Project Helix. This potential cost reflects a scenario where the company chooses not to subsidize the hardware, with a projected release window during the 2028 holiday season.
Mike Ybarra, former Blizzard president and Xbox vice president, expressed strong skepticism regarding these figures. On October 20, he stated on X that a console priced in that range would fail to sell significant units, asserting that he would not launch such a device at all.
Ybarra argues that consoles are intended for the mass market and require an affordable entry price, ideally between 399 and 499 dollars. He suggests that current hardware like the PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X remains sufficient for the vast majority of players until market conditions normalize.
The industry faces challenges due to rising component costs and global memory shortages, which have impacted console sales in the United States. Ybarra questions the necessity of a new generation, noting that current machines still offer substantial performance capabilities for most users.
