Electronic Arts has officially closed BioWare, ending over three decades of history for the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age. This restructuring resulted in 400 layoffs and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect title, which previously employed approximately 50 staff members.
Avi Lewis, leader of the New Democratic Party, has proposed that the Canadian government provide federal support to allow BioWare employees to purchase and manage the studio themselves. Lewis criticized private equity for prioritizing short-term profits over business stability.
Despite the proposal, there is no formal project or budget in place. The plan faces significant political hurdles, as Lewis lacks the necessary support to execute such an acquisition. Furthermore, Liberal MP Eleanor Olszewski expressed disappointment regarding the closure but showed no interest in negotiating a purchase with Electronic Arts.
Even if a buyout occurred, Electronic Arts would likely retain ownership of intellectual properties like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Consequently, the studio would require permission from the publisher to continue developing these franchises, and there is currently no indication that Electronic Arts intends to sell the studio.
