Players of GTA V often suspect that traffic is programmed to intentionally collide with them, creating a persistent myth that Rockstar Games designed vehicles to veer into the player. However, an investigation by the YouTube channel Obvious Malcolm+ into the game's files clarifies that this behavior is not an intentional design choice.
The game utilizes a system of independent nodes rather than a unified map, with NPCs following predetermined lines. Drivers are instructed to reach the next node, but if they deviate, they perform erratic maneuvers to return to their assigned path. The game engine makes real-time, random decisions regarding lane changes, which often leads to unpredictable movements.
When the AI detects an obstacle or loses its path, it attempts to correct its trajectory, often resulting in sharp turns into oncoming traffic. Furthermore, traffic lights are ineffective because intersection regulation is handled by attributes fixed to the nodes. Intersections feature a 40-second red light and 5-second green light cycle without a buffer period, causing frequent NPC collisions.
In GTA Online, the lack of dedicated servers forces traffic synchronization between player connections. NPCs may swerve to avoid objects visible only to other players or generated briefly. Additionally, panic states caused by player actions and nodes placed too closely together force drastic lane changes, contributing to the chaotic traffic environment.
