Microsoft has introduced Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD), a technology designed to mitigate the lengthy shader compilation process that often delays PC gaming. By offloading this task to the cloud, shaders are prepared on Microsoft servers and downloaded alongside games, aiming to replace minutes of CPU-intensive waiting with a process taking only seconds.

NVIDIA officially added support for ASD on October 21 with driver version 621.01. To utilize this feature, users must run Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, use the required NVIDIA driver, and access games through the Xbox app for PC. Currently, the technology is limited to specific titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Gears of War: E-Day.

Digital Foundry notes that while ASD reduces initial startup delays, it does not resolve all performance stutters, specifically those caused by loading new game environments. Furthermore, the technology is currently restricted to the Microsoft Store and Xbox app, with integration for Steam and Epic Games Store still pending.

Broad adoption remains a hurdle, as developers must manually integrate ASD into their titles. While the feature has expanded from its 2025 debut on ROG XBOX Ally to include AMD Radeon and now NVIDIA RTX hardware, Microsoft continues working to bring compatibility to Intel and Qualcomm systems to eventually cover more of the PC library.
