The beta for World of Warcraft: Forever has concluded, with the full game scheduled for release in November. The project aims to provide a perpetual experience designed to last 10-20 years without traditional expansions, focusing instead on horizontal growth within the classic Azeroth setting.
Despite the goal of horizontal progression, developers intend to maintain some vertical power scaling. Lead game designer Tim Jones confirmed that future raid tiers will offer improved loot, though the team aims to keep gear from earlier raids relevant. Associate production director Clay Stone noted that the studio intends to limit power creep between raid tiers.
PC Gamer columnist Joshua Wolens expresses concern regarding this endgame structure. He argues that relying on gear progression to sustain a long-term raiding scene may eventually lead to issues like mandatory attunement questlines or the need for stat squishes. He suggests that Blizzard might struggle to move away from two decades of linear design habits.
Wolens suggests that Blizzard could instead explore alternative endgame models, such as those seen in Guild Wars 2, which utilize masteries or skill trees rather than relying on tiered gear. While the author believes the current approach may function initially, he questions whether the developer will eventually need to fundamentally reinvent the endgame to avoid future complications.
