The Japan Actors Union, representing approximately 2,600 performers, has introduced new measures aimed at protecting industry professionals from the unauthorized use of generative AI. These guidelines seek to establish clear ethical standards regarding how voice and likeness data are utilized in commercial media.
Under the proposed framework, companies must obtain consent at every stage of the process. This includes mandatory disclosure when an actor's voice is used for training purposes and the requirement to negotiate fair compensation. The union compares this process to licensing one's likeness for traditional commercial endorsements.
The union advocates for significant restrictions concerning deceased performers. AI mimicry of a late actor would be prohibited unless consent was granted before their death. Furthermore, the guidelines mandate that living family members or estate administrators must provide explicit permission and receive royalty payments to prevent the commercial exploitation or desecration of a performer's legacy.
These consent requirements extend to AI-translated performances as well. While the union emphasizes the importance of respecting an individual's wishes, the long-term impact of these proposals on the broader Japanese entertainment industry remains to be seen.
