On October 21, 2026, Electronic Arts announced the closure of BioWare. Industry analysts suggest this decision stems from a massive debt burden following EA's acquisition by a group of investors, including the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners.
The acquisition resulted in approximately US$ 18 billion in debt, requiring annual interest payments of US$ 1.8 billion. Analyst Joost Van Dreunen noted that maintaining a studio with 50 employees working on long-term projects became unsustainable under EA's new strategy to cut costs and improve financial performance.
Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis attributes the closure to poor commercial performance of recent titles. Specifically, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet sales expectations, making the studio a target for consolidation as EA prioritizes more profitable investments.
While Canadian politician Avi Lewis proposed a government-supported employee buyout to maintain independence, no such plans have materialized. EA has officially canceled the next Mass Effect project, ending the studio's 30-year history.
